Brazilian poet Olavo Bilac described Portuguese as ultima flor do Lacio, inculta e bela, or 'the last flower of Latin, wild and beautiful'. Miguel de Cervantes, Spanish author of Don Quixote, regarded it as 'the sweet language'. More than 200million people across the globe speak Portuguese.

Volunteers find their own rewards

Pamela Iong Kun-kun, learned the value of doing homework on one of her assignments as a games volunteer. Iong, 21, was asked to host the Chinese shooting team during the games' test event shooting invitational in August. It entailed greeting them at the airport, taking them to settle down at the hotel, and accompanying them throughout their stay in Macau.

PORTUGUESE IS a well-travelled language. Thanks to all those seafarers, adventurers and merchants of Portugal's golden age, it has crossed cultures on five continents.

An estimated 200 million people worldwide speak Portuguese, making it the sixth most spoken language in the world.

Around the world in 730 days

A Portuguese couple and their two children started a two-year trip around the world from Macau in a four-wheel-drive. Television journalist Sofia Salgado, multimedia producer Mica Costa Grande, five-year-old Eloi and three-year-old Saskia plan to arrive in Portugal's northern city of Oporto in the first half of 2002 after covering 150,000km by land and 40,000km by sea.
