March was volunteer month in my family. It started with flag day, standing outside a shopping centre in Causeway Bay, soliciting donations for the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation.

Voluntary service isn't so voluntary

Nowadays in school and university, everyone talks about the importance of doing voluntary service. The number of hours an applicant has spent in community service has become a relevant criteria in university and job interviews. There are even scholarships that are offered specifically to these dedicated members of society.

Youth 'too busy' to lend a hand

LACK of sufficient free time is the main reason young people are not more involved in voluntary service, a recent youth poll indicated.

Over 75 per cent of a total of 536 young people interviewed said they had not done any voluntary service over the past six months.

Young offenders serve community

JUVENILE delinquents at correctional homes have been doing voluntary work at community centres and homes for the elderly and the handicapped in recent years.

They have been selling flags, cleaning beaches, planting trees and providing entertainment for the elderly and the physically or mentally handicapped.
