Volkswagen aiming for pole position

Volkswagen aims to replace Toyota as Hong Kong's No 1 car seller in terms of sales, product range, and after-sales service by 2018.

That means Volkswagen will have to nearly double monthly sales to 6,000 cars over the next six years in a market where the number of new car registrations grew just 8.35 per cent a year on average in the five years to 2011.

Living up to the hype

Alfa Romeo has a long tradition of making stylish, racy cars.

Founded in 1910 as A.L.F.A (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili), the marque began at the Portello factory in Milan and, in the following year, entered a car in the Targa Florio, an open road endurance race.

Juke has broad appeal

Nissan has made crossover vehicles for a decade. The popular 3.5-litre Murano in 2002 merged the size of a sports utility vehicle with the comforts of a saloon and soon became a best-seller. The smaller, two-litre Qashqai has been equally impressive as a tall, economic hatchback.

Drivers' seventh heaven

Toyota's hybrids seem increasingly sanctimonious about their fuel economy, and the name of its latest model, the Prius V, has an ecclesiastical ring to it.

Yet, the Japanese marque has good reason to believe the new seven-seater can win converts to its fuel-sipping technology.

New, bolder Beetle races ahead

The Volkswagen Beetle needed a thorough overhaul to compete with the latest urban runabouts, and the newest version is a vast improvement on its predecessor.

Launched last week in New York, Berlin and Shanghai Auto, which closed yesterday, the latest Beetle looks bolder than the New Beetle of 1998, and could have the stylish BMW Mini and Audi A1 in its sights.

Resistance is futile

The season of Christmas shopping and running the family around for festive get-togethers may be an opportune time to launch a multi-purpose vehicle. Although the timing was coincidental, when the wrapping came off the 2011 Mazda 5 MPV in Hong Kong this month, the Japanese carmaker's compelling gift was a sportier and more stylish reincarnation of the compact people carrier.

Bolt out of the blue

BYD looked set to become one of the leading forces in the mainland motoring industry earlier this year. The company only started manufacturing cars in 2005, but in the first quarter of this year it topped sales figures on the mainland with the F3. For total production figures, the carmaker came in fourth place, behind two Volkswagen joint ventures and General Motors.

Classic bikes photo-op

The Festival Walk shopping centre in Kowloon Tong invites posers to its display of vintage motorbikes on its LG2 floor. Part of the mall's Father's Day (June 21) promotions until July 1, the bikes line up from 11am to 10pm, and for a good cause.

Three and easy

Normally, a car will sell best when it's new, but the Mazda3 contravenes this code. The recently-superseded model enjoyed a sales peak right at the end of its production cycle (last year's global sales were up 37 per cent compared with when it was first introduced, in 2004).

Lost in space

Estate cars are rare in Hong Kong. Families seem to have focused on multi-seaters and sports utility vehicles, which are arguably bulkier. Audi is a notable exception and its A4 wagon has a devoted following; the successful small executive estate accounts for about half of A4s sold. Alfa Romeo's 159 SW 3.2 JTS Q4 Sportwagon is another hottie.
