Bentley business booms

Bentley's brand continues to grow on the mainland. The marque says it sold more than 1,000 cars across the border and a record 396 in the first four months of this year, a 66 per cent improvement on the previous, best year. 'Around one in four Bentleys sold globally is now sold in China,' the marque says, citing its first worldwide dealer conference in Beijing last month.

New, bolder Beetle races ahead

The Volkswagen Beetle needed a thorough overhaul to compete with the latest urban runabouts, and the newest version is a vast improvement on its predecessor.

Launched last week in New York, Berlin and Shanghai Auto, which closed yesterday, the latest Beetle looks bolder than the New Beetle of 1998, and could have the stylish BMW Mini and Audi A1 in its sights.

Big is beautiful for HK drivers

The previous BMW 6 Series Convertible was a big, imposing and beautifully engineered drive. The models are a potential handful to park and understandably rare in compact Hong Kong, but they do turn heads and last Friday's launch of the latest versions drew the local rich in droves to the Hong Kong Jockey Club's Parade Ring at the Happy Valley racecourse.

Aston's Rapide wins rave reviews

The new Rapide is Aston Martin's first four-door saloon since the Lagonda, last made in 1989. However, whereas the Lagonda was a luxury saloon, with rather controversial styling and few sporting aspirations, the Rapide is first and foremost a sports car - a four-seat supercar which has claims to be the best looking saloon in the world.

Motorsport show revs up

The Asia-Motorsport Show will be held at AsiaWorld-Expo's marshalling area in Chek Lap Kok today and tomorrow. The event promises shows of cars, souped-up machines, drift demonstrations (at 1pm and 3.10pm), and car audio systems 'that are going to blow your mind', says the organiser's website, Asia-motorsport.com/en/event_carshow.php.

What drives it? A 1,598cc four-cylinder 120-brake-horsepower engine with a six-speed automatic transmission on 17-inch wheels; the basic Clubman's on 16-inchers.

How fast is it? Quick; hits 100km/h in 7.6 seconds and tops at 219km/h. The basic Clubman version sprints to 99.2km/h in 9.8 seconds and wellies to 195km/h, which is adequate here.

Tycoon dips into his pocket and adds another Roller to his collection

One guy who's not worrying about subprime issues and a recession is playboy tycoon Cecil Chao Sze-tsung. The chairman of Cheuk Nang Holdings recently took delivery of the city's first two-door Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe. It's the third Rolls in his collection, after a luxury Phantom he owns here and another in Macau. The car was delivered late last month.

The haze was thick over the harbour last Sunday, but there were plenty of sights for sore eyes at the Classic Car Club of Hong Kong's Chater Road show. More than 80 classics were lined up outside the centres of Central, and even experts were spoiled for choice.
