Cellars full of the good stuff and at great prices

THE CURRENT OVERSUPPLY of Australian wine, the result of two years of extraordinarily high vineyard yields, has been a windfall for consumers worldwide, with highly competitive pricing becoming the norm.

However, there is a danger of Australia's image as a producer of reliable fruit-driven table wine obscuring the country's reputation for quality high-end production.

The making of an Aussie icon

Take a corkscrew and respectfully approach a bottle of Majella shiraz. Extract the cork. Then go away for a couple of hours. This wine needs time to compose itself before you drink.

The waiting is worth it. After the first sip, you may reverently admire the taste of this outstanding wine.

Just what the doctor ordered

It is a unique peculiarity about Australian wines that many of the great grape pioneers of the continent were doctors.

Some of the early planters of grapes had sailed from England as duty medicos on ships loaded with convicts and pioneer settlers. These vessels were renowned for sickness and bad conditions, and wine was regarded as a cure.

Fine drop from red earth zone

Down at the bottom of Australia, where South Australia runs into Victoria, not far from the Southern Ocean, is what is said to be a unique geographical feature. It is not as visible as a mountain or a lake, but this geological freak stands out plainly on the world's wine maps.
