Hong Kong would grind to standstill without hard-working helpers

I refer to Prakash Mahbubani's letter ('Give helpers minimum wage, but make them pay their own bills', January 17).

He makes it quite clear he thinks that helpers are overpaid since their wages cover their accommodation and transport home and implies they don't work as hard as they say they do.

Mountain bikers should not be given more country park trails

I refer to the letter from Paul Mak ('Plea for trails', September 10) proposing the opening up of more trails for cycling in the country parks.

Your correspondent bemoans the authorities for having 'adopted a restrictive attitude towards this healthy exercise, by banning cycling in our beautiful country parks and just allowing a few cycling trails'.

With less than a month until the Beijing Olympics begin, foreign correspondents in the capital are still dissatisfied with the extent to which the central government has realised its commitment to 'free and full access to the media'.

Jon Watts, president of the Foreign Correspondents Club of China, said: 'There is still not complete access for foreign journalists.

Your correspondent pinpointed that some agencies pay lower salaries and use the saved money to hire more staff than approved.
