Gateball takes over where croquet left off

Lawn bowls and cricket are just two of the British sports that have taken root in the city. A more unusual pursuit associated with the colonial era has also found a home here via a transformation in Japan: gateball.

Onion crushed as Zen power gets hammered

We've held off mentioning the forthcoming Tokyo Shock Boys show next month but we felt the arrival of an onion in this morning's post was worthy of a few lines.

After our ever-vigilant mail-room assistant hit the bulky parcel with a croquet mallet as a precaution against rogue biochemicals, explosives or small mammals, the near-flat vegetable arrived at our desk.

Fun day out for old folks

About 300 senior citizens enjoyed an outing to Ma On Shan, thanks to Wong Tai Sin Junior Police Call (JPC) members.

The guests, along with 40 JPC members, spent a day at the Helping Hand Cheung Muk Tau Holiday Centre for the Elderly.

They tried different outdoor sports and games, including lawn bowls, gateball and shooting.

Try your hand at 5 games

THIS year's 'Come and Try Scheme' starts with a fun day at the Kowloon Park Indoor Games Hall tomorrow.

The scheme, organised by the Urban Council, will promote five sports - fun cricket, shuttlecock, three-a-side basketball, gateball and general gymnastics.

Oxbridge's final fling for summer

MEMBERS of the Oxford and Cambridge Society will no doubt be brushing up on summer ball etiquette even though the event they will be staging at the Hong Kong Country Club on Friday is billed as an Autumn Ball.

Since the action will take place from 8 pm to 3 am we are puzzled that one of the bits of the entertainment on offer is 'Croquet on the Lawn'.
