On the evening of Saturday, November 3, along with hundreds of other Hong Kong residents, I enjoyed a magnificent sunset from Nam Sang Wai in the New Territories.

The winners of last year's cross-harbour swimming race yesterday held on to their titles despite fierce competition from a bigger field over a shorter course than last year's event.

As I walked down the steps to the Lei Yue Mun public pier in my swimsuit, my thoughts turned briefly to that famous black-and-white photograph of swimmers diving into Victoria Harbour, cross-harbour ferries and high rises in the background.

Veteran swimmers angry at minimum age for cross-harbour swim qualifiers

The Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association had imposed 50 as the minimum age in the oldest category for men and women participants.

Veteran swimmers say they have been prevented from taking part in today's cross-harbour swim because organisers defined the oldest qualifying age category differently from the sport's world governing body.

Sonar detectors to ensure safety in cross-harbour swim

Organisers of Sunday's cross-harbour swim will use sonar technology to identify swimmers who may be in danger of drowning.

The Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association said yesterday it would use two of the hi-tech detectors, mounted on boats, to spot swimmers who dropped below a certain level in the water.
