CSL seeks to keep edge by doubling download speeds

CSL, the largest wireless network operator in Hong Kong, with brands including 1010 and one2free, yesterday showcased a new high-speed service with theoretical peak download speeds of up to 300 megabits a second - double its current best.

CSL said the expansion was made possible by more than HK$1 billion it had invested on network development and innovation since last year. It now provides 20 megahertz of 4G spectrum in the 2.6-gigahertz frequency band, up from 15MHz previously.

Legco panel to look into 3G spectrum issue

SmarTone Telecommunications, CSL, Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong and PCCW's HKT are to be invited by the legislative body's panel on information technology and broadcasting to discuss the issue on March 27, according to a Legco document.

The government, represented by the Communications Authority, is expected to decide on that plan in October, which would be exactly three years before the 3G spectrum licences of CSL, SmarTone Telecommunications, Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong and PCCW's HKT are due to expire.

CSL says no to transparency in billing at hearing of Small Claims Tribunal

Mobile telephone operator CSL refused to agree to provide billing transparency to one of its customers during a hearing at the Small Claims Tribunal yesterday.

"We never overcharge customers," the company representative told the court, but said the rates quoted on its website could sometimes lag behind changes to roaming tariffs.

Mobile data plans get speed limits

After weeks of speculation, certain mobile service providers have decided to retain their unlimited data plans - but with limits.

On Monday, CSL, which oversees One2Free and 1010, announced that it will continue to provide unlimited data plans, but when clients use more than five gigabytes of data, internet speed will be reduced.

Not separate companies

In answer to my earlier letter about the different rates charged to Hongkong Telecom CSL and One2Free customers, CSL replied, through these columns, on April 7, saying that in response to my complaint, it had 'provided recommendations that will best serve [my] needs'. Substitute 'its' needs and I would agree.
