Seized tusks were legal hippo trade

Tusks seized by Macau authorities in bags bearing Hong Kong government seals were legally traded hippo tusks, not elephant ivory, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said yesterday.

Customs seize fake brand clothes

Nine people were arrested yesterday when customs officers raided six garment shops in Kowloon City and seized counterfeit clothes worth HK$1.4 million.

Officers seized about 12,000 items of clothing in shops on Lion Rock Road. Investigations showed the counterfeits were imitations of brand names and were out-of-season goods for export, substandard goods or samples.

Customs swoop on suspected smugglers

Customs has arrested seven suspected smugglers, including three core members of a racket that used powerful speedboats to sneak high-value goods to the mainland over the past few years. The crackdown dealt a heavy blow to the syndicate.

Computer hard disks, integrated circuit chips, cellphones and other goods with an estimated retail value of HK$22 million were also seized.
