Ana Gura

This new Japanese eatery is thankfully far enough down the hill from the noisy demolition work taking place at California Tower for it to feel like a world away. The sleek interior, predominantly in shiny black, oozes futuristic glam, but the menu is less intimidating - plenty of sushi and sashimi, grilled and hot pot dishes.

Comedy club crew wear a winning combination

There was no shortage of people in crazy (and lazy) costumes during this All Hallow's Eve, but special credit must go to the TakeOut Comedy gang for an effort that showed local relevance and Canto-creativity. Leader and TakeOut head lunatic Jami Gong and a dozen of his crew stormed Central on Friday and Saturday nights dressed as mahjong tiles. It wasn't just any 13 tiles.

James Zabiela

Volar, May 27, 10pm

Technical wizard James Zabiela has taken the art of DJing to another level. He is one of a new generation of DJs who have embraced technology to layer beats and sounds in a way that can't be done by simply using 12-inch vinyl and twin turntables.

Hirst exhibition free of animal carcasses

Damien Hirst is probably best known for his giant installations of dissected dead animals preserved in formaldehyde. Unfortunately, Fabrik Contemporary Art's new gallery space probably couldn't display them even if they owned any. That's how small their little studio is on the fourth floor of the Yip Fung Building on D'Aguilar Street.

Uptown Rockers

Volar, tomorrow, 10pm

If you've been to a fashion show in the past year, chances are the music was provided by one of three impossibly cool Eurasian DJs. With their tongues planted firmly in their cheeks, the trio have carved out their own niche by dropping a selection of rock'n'roll mixed with new-wave electro house that just shouldn't work - but somehow always does.

Boozers beat the buzzer

Why are there so many drunk people skidding breathlessly around Page One bookstore in D'Aguilar Street late on Monday nights? It seems to be a question of geography.

Litter of the law

At approximately 11.20pm on Friday, May 11, I was walking with a friend along D'Aguilar Street near Lan Kwai Fong when we observed a police officer on duty throw his used tissue on the ground.

If that wasn't bad enough, when he realised we had seen him, he used his foot to manoeuvre the tissue into a drain. Others nearby also saw the incident.
