Mission Hills chief slips away quietly

Mission Hills founder and chairman David Chu Shu-ho kept as low a profile in death as he did in life. The funeral was held in Hong Kong this week of the pioneer of golf on the mainland and one of the most powerful people in the game after he lost his fight with cancer. He was 61.

'I LIKE GOLF, I JUST DIDN'T LIKE IT enough,' says David Chu, the creative director of Tumi, the US-based luggage company. He is sitting in his suite at the Four Seasons looking out at Victoria Harbour 42 stories below. All around are examples of Tumi's new Voyager line, designed by Chu.

Case Study

When Tumi creative director David Chu travels, he does it in style.

1. Bushnell Golf Range Finder

'A gift from a friend ... I always carry it.'

2. Tumi Wilton Messenger bag

'My everyday bag.'

3. Titanium Oakley sunglasses

'I always wear them when I play golf.'

Designer David Chu's business is in the bag

Safari was the theme at the launch of Tumi's new travel bag collection at Landmark Mandarin Oriental's Amber restaurant on Thursday. Amid the glittery restaurant decor was a faux tent with models in khaki pretending to brave the wilderness while pawing luggage. Yes, it's an odd juxtaposition, but it didn't bother designer David Chu.

Provisional Legislator David Chu Yu-lin, who is running for one of the 10 seats on the Election Committee, is flying high.

The Hong Kong Progressive Alliance contender has included his logo fei chu (flying pig) in his election pamphlet.

The word 'pig' is a homophone of 'chu' in Cantonese.

Challenging path to technological success

I wholeheartedly agree with David Chu's article 'An Asian answer to Silicon Valley' (South China Morning Post, January 8).

Hong Kong is one of the most expensive cities in the world in which to live. As such, it can no longer rely on low-margin manufacturing businesses.

Appreciate kindness

My children and I would like to express our deepest gratitude to the people of Hong Kong who have so very generously contributed to the fund set up for my late husband Tom Larmour.

In particular, we would like to thank David Chu who initiated the fund with his most generous donation of HK$100,000.

Quick-fix wrong for civil service

If there is anything we can count on in Hong Kong, it is that we are blessed with a civil service that should be used to implement policy rather than be tampered with to serve a political agenda or enable a leader to stamp his or her personality on government.

Learning to think about our objectives

Later this month I will be fielding my first motion in the Provisional Legislative Council and it will be on education reform.

To prepare for the subject, I have finished a 17-page analysis covering various aspects of Hong Kong education as it emerges from a colonial past and into a Special Administrative Region future.
