Saint-Martin gets season off and running with trial treble

NOT content with outrunning his fellow riders early in the night, Eric Saint-Martin then proceeded to rack up a 'treble' in last night's opening grass trial session at Sha Tin.

Be Smart and take a chance with Lord

Smartlord can improve sufficiently to take the opening griffin event on today's Lunar New Year card at Sha Tin.

It looks to be a race in three on a day where elsewhere on the programme there are some fascinating but decidedly tricky contests with the good things at first glance perhaps not being such certain winners after all.

Allan seeks change of luck

Supporters of champion trainer Ivan Allan could tonight be toasting victory in the Remy XO Cup.

Allan goes into the important sponsored event double-handed and it is Citiluck, likely to start fractionally less favoured than topweight Privilege, who could be the one to land the prize.

Cruz's stable star hits straps for QEII

Sha Tin was a wet and deserted racecourse yesterday morning and it was left to Gold Cup winner Deauville to brighten up the routine trackwork session. Tony Cruz was one of only a handful of trainers around with many on their way back from Sydney and he had every reason to be pleased with the latest effort of his stable star as Deauville prepares for the Queen Elizabeth II Cup.

Gold Cup win no sure guide to Deauville's real potential

Deauville made it two from two since moving to the Tony Cruz camp and his victory in The Hong Kong Gold Cup provided further evidence that the six-time former champion jockey is just as potent an influence as a trainer as he was in the saddle.

Cruz magic is Deauville's key to success

Deauville is almost the forgotten horse in Saturday's Gold Cup, but the way he looked when working on the grass yesterday morning he's certainly worth remembering come the 2,000-metre spectacular.

Rarely has a domestic race in the territory attracted such a high-class field.

Cruz continues his march to glory

Tony Cruz's seemingly inexorable march towards training glory continued unabated at Sha Tin's big Lunar New Year fixture yesterday, when Deauville took the prestigious Centenary Vase and completed a double for the racing legend.

Deauville primed for Vase challenge

A holiday on New Year's Day meant a fairly hectic work schedule at Sha Tin yesterday with familiar faces back in action and any number of horses involved in today's 10-race Sha Tin card having their final tune-ups.

Allan's Privilege to prevail

The battle is rejoined at the Lunar New Year meeting at Sha Tin today between old staying rivals Privilege and Deauville.

9 Feb 1997 - 12:00am

Cruz-prepared Deauville looks tough enough

There were even fewer top riders in action at yesterday's trackwork session than the day before and meaningful work was thin on the ground, too.

There was one intriguing piece involving the now Tony Cruz-trained Deauville who, for some inexplicable reason, joined the burgeoning Cruz team from Patrick Biancone.

Omens point to Port Hope improving on griffin year

A BIG session at the track yesterday morning for the Lawrie Fownes' team with the winning griffin Port Hope going well enough to suggest he's worth one more chance.

A good judge was only saying at the end of this week that when Port Hope's sire, Grosvenor, gets a decent two-year-old they invariably train on.

Tactics pay dividends as Privilege shows true grit

They don't come much better than Privilege, as he underlined with a typically tenacious triumph in yesterday's classy feature event, the Remy XO Cup.

On the double for punters

Prices ma be on the short side but a double on progressive Fireball and one-time Melbourne Cup aspirant Deauville could end the night at Sha Tin on the right note. Trainer Wong Tang-ping put a heap of work into Fireball before his first-up run when he won commandingly in the end for South African ace, Douglas Whyte.

Deauville to exact revenge

FRENCH trainer Patrick Biancone has had to play an unwanted second fiddle to Ivan Allan in recent weeks, but he could gain a measure of revenge in the important Queen Mother's Cup at Sha Tin tonight.

Privilege's stamp of class highlights Cup victory

Owner's dream Privilege duly clinched the end-of-season staying finale, the Champions and Chater Cup, with a 2,400-metre display that had everything - pace, guts and class. In the process he was completing a treble for trainer Ivan Allan and jockey Basil Marcus - a treble which gave Allan one hand on the championship trophy as it put him four clear of arch-rival Patrick Biancone.
