Hundreds of friends, family and former colleagues of Lord Murray MacLehose filled St John's Cathedral yesterday for a thanksgiving service in memory of the governor who presided over Hong Kong's 'golden years'.

Roberts' Anatomy Of A Witness

The former Chief Justice, Sir Denys Roberts, clearly has too much time on his hands. His latest despatch from Brunei, where he is sitting, takes out five pages of Hong Kong lawyers' rag The New Gazette, where he waxes lyrical about the thought processes judges use to determine whether the person standing before the bench is a congenital liar or the real McCoy.

I REFER to the article by your Europe Editor David Wallen, headlined, ''Apathy hits institute's HK forum'' (South China Morning Post, May 21), in which he reported that a Commonwealth Institute conference had been cancelled in London, ''due to lack of interest''.

Whatever the truth of this report, in contrast, the Royal Commonwealth Society, Hong Kong, is flourishing.
