Yabu Pushelberg

Who started it? George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg (far right with Yabu), interior-design classmates at Ryerson Polytechnic in Toronto, Canada. Their professional partnership began in 1980 as a two-person studio in Toronto. It expanded to include 100 designers with the establishment of a New York office in 2001.

China products store shuts shop

One of the city's last remaining China products stores closed its doors for the last time yesterday.

The family owner of Chung Hing Company, a household name which operated in Mong Kok for more than half a century, said the store had to close because of rising costs, a strong yuan and rapid urban renewal, which forced many clients out of the neighbourhood.

Confusion seemed in store for shoppers last night, on the eve of the start of the 50-cent plastic-bag levy. Some major retailers were not on the list of those legally bound to collect the levy and at least one planned to collect HK$1 - double the required charge.
