Rio Tinto decides to hang on to diamonds business

Global miner Rio Tinto Ltd has scrapped the planned sale of its diamonds business, valued in its books at US$1.3 billion (HK$10.1 billion), amid a slide in global financial markets and a tough environment for commodity asset sales.

Luggage handler steals diamonds from plane's hold

An airport worker has been jailed for six months for stealing two jewellery items worth HK$96,000 from a passenger's luggage.

Acting Principle Magistrate Timothy Casewell said Choy Ka-keung, a 34-year-old luggage handler, took advantage of his job to illegally access passengers' belongings.

BHP sells diamond assets for US$500 million

The world’s largest miner BHP Billiton on Wednesday said it was exiting the diamond industry, selling its Canadian assets to retailer Harry Winston Diamond Corp. for US$500 million.

BHP had an 80 per cent stake in the EKATI diamond mine, which produces more than three million carats of rough diamonds a year.

Planet twice the size of earth made of diamond

Forget the diamond as big as the Ritz. This one's bigger than planet Earth.

Astronomers have discovered a planet twice the size of our own made largely out of diamond, orbiting a star that is visible to the naked eye.

The planet, called "55 Cancri e", orbits a sun-like star in the constellation of Cancer and is moving so fast that a year there lasts a mere 18 hours.

‘Diamond swallower’ was a bluff, Sri Lankan police say

A Chinese man accused of swallowing a diamond worth US$13,600 at a gem show in Sri Lanka actually ingested a fake stone in an elabourate bluff to allow the real thief to escape, police said on Tuesday.

Detectives discovered the ruse after waiting until the man, 32, passed the fake stone that he had swallowed at the Facets Sri Lanka annual jewellery exhibition in Colombo last week.
