Footloose fashion if you dare to bare

There's a lot of debate in men's style magazines and blogs as to whether sandals on men are acceptable. Purists and conservatives argue that such footwear has no place in a man's wardrobe: sandals are just too gauche and unbecoming for any self-respecting gentleman.

Forget the skinny as men's labels beef up the runways

I blame Marcus Schenkenberg for many of my body issues. He of the muscles that seem to have been cast from Michelangelo's David. Practically naked in the Versace ads of the late 80s and the early 90s, he made me want to hit the gym to bulk up. I was in my teenage years going through a growth spurt that left me all skin and bone, with no hope.

Trends in Paris

The new suit: designers experimented with new silhouettes (long and lean), while deconstructing the traditional suit.

Jumpsuits: Tuxedo hybrids at Givenchy and embellished at Alexis Mabille.

Sleeveless vests: edgy leather pieces at Rick Owens while others came with a deep V-neck.

Balance of power

L'Espadon restaurant at the Ritz hotel in Paris, just off the Place Vendome, is one of the city's best spots for people-watching. Actors Sharon Stone and Tom Cruise are regulars and former French prime minister Dominique de Villepin often drops in for tea. But no heads turn when Kris Van Assche, Dior Homme's creative director, makes his entrance.
