Diplomatic immunity granted 11 times in Hong Kong

Fewer than a dozen diplomats have been granted immunity from criminal prosecution since China regained sovereignty over Hong Kong from Britain in 1997, according to figures released by the Hong Kong government.

Egyptian charged with smuggling stun guns onto flight

A 48-year-old man with links to the Egyptian consulate in Hong Kong will appear in court tomorrow accused of smuggling stun guns and tear gas onto a flight leaving Chek Lap Kok Airport.

Diplomats evade parking fines

Consulates in Hong Kong used their diplomatic immunity to tear up 22 parking tickets last year.

The Italian Consulate, which topped the list with six tickets, apologised when approached by the South China Morning Post for a response.

'I'm sorry we are topping the list,' said a consulate spokesman. 'We will try to be more careful.'

An honorary vice-consul of the East African country of Djibouti unsuccessfully claimed diplomatic immunity after his car was stopped in Tai Po following a chase at 5.30am. The man, 45, was asked to take a breathalyser test but refused to take a second after an unsuccessful first try. Police said breathalyser tests were not covered under the Consular Relations Ordinance.

Envoys invoke diplomatic immunity to escape scandal

The row surrounding the son of Nigeria's top envoy to Hong Kong is the latest in a series of diplomatic scandals to hit the territory in the past year.

At least two top envoys have found themselves in a brush with the authorities and tried to invoke diplomatic immunity under the Vienna Convention and Hong Kong's Consular Relations Ordinance.

Alleged Causeway Bay assault unimaginable, says consul-general after defending decision to claim immunity

Vietnamese consul-general Nguyen Viet Hung yesterday vehemently denied groping a young woman in the street, although he claimed diplomatic immunity to avoid prosecution.

Mr Nguyen told the South China Morning Post: 'You have to understand my status. I'm a consul-general, a representative of my state here in Hong Kong.

Proposals give Tung role in conferring diplomatic privileges

Tung Chee-hwa will be given a role in conferring privileges on diplomats in Hong Kong under new proposals gazetted yesterday.

The Consular Relations Bill seeks to fill a possible loophole in the existing ordinance created by the return to Chinese rule.
