The Yellow Pages' Internet telephone directory will generate at least half of the phone book publisher's revenues within five years, according to Telecom Directories.

Jacques Lanthier, its director of operations, said the growth of its Internet venture - begun three years ago - has far outstripped that of the printed telephone books.

Users should be asked how many directories they want.

Why directory was split

I REFER to the letter headlined, ''Looking for extra bucks'' (South China Morning Post, August 11), and should like to reply to A. L. Nanik's concerns.

First of all, may I point out that there is already an alphabetical listing of all businesses, territory-wide, including the Chemical Bank, contained in the Business White Pages directory to which all residents are entitled.

Yellow Pages to be reused

NEXT time you see your Yellow Pages telephone directory, it might be in the shape of a cardboard box, or in the form of a note-pad as a result of a recycling scheme.

In an effort to help the environment, people will be encouraged to drop off some of the two million Yellow Pages and business directories in the territory, in exchange for the 1993 editions at collection centres.
