Doctor swallows disinfectant in suicide bid

A doctor at Tung Wah Hospital's department of surgery was critically ill after he swallowed half a bottle of disinfectant in an apparent suicide attempt. The 25-year-old houseman was found unconscious on a chair by a cleaner at about 11.40am at the staff quarters near the hospital on Po Yan Street in Sheung Wan. Half a bottle of disinfectant and some drugs were found next to him.

Push for more cleaning staff

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department was severely understaffed and lacked enough equipment to clean the city properly, a union said yesterday.

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department Staff Rights Union said the government should recruit up to 500 contract staff and 2,000 permanent workers to help with disinfection of public space.

Experts say a combination of viruses that has killed about 300 pigs in Guangdong in the past 10 days will not threaten humans.

A preliminary report by Ministry of Agriculture experts yesterday said a combination of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, swine fever and porcine circovirus caused the bacterial infection.

Tainted water bottle 'isolated case'

Watson's Water Company said tests proved its bottled water was safe after a case in which drops of disinfectant were found in a bottle. A girl, nine, fell sick on Sunday after drinking a bottle her mother bought from a Mannings store in Diamond Hill. Food and Environmental Hygiene Department tests showed the affected bottle was an isolated case.

Reporters make news

A man taken to Queen Mary Hospital last night after reportedly drinking disinfectant following a row with his wife was arrested when he allegedly punched a reporter on arrival.

The man, 30, who lives in Mosque Street, Central, allegedly punched one of two reporters in the chest. The second reporter, 28, was arrested after becoming involved in a brawl.

Court suicide bid foiled

A woman facing a criminal damage charge in Tuen Mun Court was stopped by a policeman when she tried to swallow disinfectant in a suicide bid inside the court room at 11am. The 37-year-old woman was treated in hospital.

A 25-year-old woman swallowed disinfectant in her North Point home after a dispute with her boyfriend. He phoned police after she threatened to commit suicide in her third-floor flat in Pan Hoi Street. She was taken to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital for treatment.
