Rapper and diva in sync for cancer fund ball

You wouldn't think a fancy social affair like the Cancer Fund Ball would be highlighted by the performance of a rapper and a funky diva. But that was the case on Saturday night at the Grand Hyatt ballroom, where each table cost $100,000.

Following the appearance of rapper Ice-T and Naughty By Nature, it seems Dragon-i really wants to 'keep it real' with more hip hop. The next rap act to come through will be Cash Money next Wednesday and the following Saturday.

Diva delivers the decibels

The highlight of the Hong Kong Cancer Fund's Utopia Now millennium gala in the Convention Centre's Grand Hall was undoubtedly the performance by pop diva Whitney Houston. She charmed all by singing old favourites and numbers from her latest album - then gave the 3,000 guests extra value by bringing husband Bobby Brown on stage for a duet.

Audience left in limbo by lifeless diva

THE audience had come prepared to rock with laughter, thrill to the divine sounds, marvel at the prima donna's garb and perhaps blink back a tear or two.

Ninety minutes later, no hands were smarting from excessive applause and an air of resignation, mingled with regret, hung over the Studio Theatre almost as visibly as the emissions from the smoke machine.
