From Russia with love

Inspired by the legendary film Dr. Zhivago set in pre-revolutionary Russia, Kate Spade has introduced two new bags. With visions of Julie Christie scurrying down the street, her hands tucked in a Persian-lamb muffler, the designer has used faux Persian-lamb leather for her new range of autumn-winter handbags.

Snowed in with Zhivago

IF nothing else, Doctor Zhivago (Pearl, 11.40 pm) is one of the best films with the word 'doctor' in the title. The best was probably the 1931 version of Doctor Jeckyll And Mr Hyde, although Dr No, Dr In The House and Dr Who And The Daleks are all in the running.

It was directed by David Lean and does for snow what Lawrence Of Arabia did for sand.

Buy a book and make his day

''IT'S August 1944 and a DC3 Dakota struggles through thunderous rain towards Chungking in southern China. On board is none other than Mao Zedong, en route to a rendezvous with Lord Mountbatten, Supreme Allied Commander Southeast Asia, that could change the course of history . . .'' There is nothing like a good book to restore body and soul after a hard day's work.

Lean's epic journey

A WEEK of sprawling epics (The Deer Hunter, Yentl, Fiddler On The Roof) comes to an exhausted close with the sprawlingest, most seat-squirming epic of the lot, David Lean's 197 minute Doctor Zhivago (Pearl, 9.30pm). This was Lean's follow-up to the 220-minute Lawrence Of Arabia. Mr Lean likes his films long.
