An innovative plan to combat flooding in Happy Valley by building a huge tank under the racecourse that can store enough storm water to fill 24 swimming pools has won an international award for innovation.

How can we better protect our rivers and streams?

I refer to the director of drainage services' reply (Talkback, February 18) to my previous letter on the above subject (Talkback, February 14).

With the prospect of significant climate change arising from global warming, I agree that it is wise to take action to prevent flooding.

Kai Tak nullah could remain open

A nullah at Kai Tak runway could remain uncovered and its ecosystem preserved, the Drainage Services Department chief said yesterday.

'The Kai Tak nullah is beautiful. The water is very clean and there are fish ...' said Wong Chee-keung.

Contractor in pay deal over sewer deaths

The contractor involved in the sewer accident on Tuesday which left two drainage workers dead will pay wages to the deceased's families until they receive compensation and the wages will not be deducted from the compensation.

Residents robbed of peaceful environment

Since Christmas morning when I was woken by the noise of construction on Drainage Services project number 95-07, I have been both irritated and amused by the laughably slow pace and inefficient progress of these works, and the lack of concern shown by the Drainage Services Department towards residents and pedestrians on Caine Road.

Salt-water puzzle

An investigation is under way into why drinking water to 600 Tuen Mun households turned into salt water. Residents in Yue Sang House, Kin Sang Estate, found their tap water had a salty taste and smell on Wednesday. The Drainage Services Department is testing samples.
