More to it than just a cork

Bottles are by no means the only investment a wine lover's passion entails. Keeping wines in good condition in a wine-hostile climate requires specialised storage units, and appreciating them at their best involves specialised glassware.

A glass act

Most people mistakenly believe a snifter - a glass with a wide bottom and a relatively narrow top - is the best holder. But the snifter actually prevents the full enjoyment of cognac because the narrow top forces the smell of alcohol into the nose, preventing the drinker from savouring the various floral and fruity smells.

On the shelf

I love to trawl the aisles of the Jusco HK$10 shops (which are formally known as Jusco $10 Plaza Plus, although I don't know anybody who calls them that). The products are (usually) of good quality and the selection is eclectic.

Bottomless decadence at pink liquid picnic on the lawn

Normally they frown if you set foot on The Repulse Bay's front lawn, but on Friday night, champagne house Moet & Chandon was permitted to hold a 'pink-nic' right on the grass. Publicising their pink rose to the upper-crust crowd, they even encouraged guests to lie down outdoors on pink blankets and pillows while being served bottomless tulip-shaped champagne flutes and hors d'oeuvres.

How to choose ... a cocktail shaker

A range of glasses, called Open Up (below), aims to help develop the flavours of white wines less than three years old and red wines under five.

Beer handed

'It was pretty regular this year and I didn't have trouble with any really drunk people. It's my third year here, and I really like it. It's a tough job, but I get to watch a bit of rugby in between the selling.
