Efforts were being made last night to save the right foot of a recently sacked driving instructor - now at the centre of an industrial dispute - after he was knocked down by a car.

Learner driver and instructor arrested

A driving instructor and his student have been arrested and bailed for allegedly perverting the course of justice. The teacher, 69, allegedly told police he had been driving when a car knocked down and injured a boy, 14, in Tai Pak Tin Street, Kwai Chung, yesterday afternoon. Witnesses said the learner, a woman, 32, was in the driver's seat.

Driving instructor policy 'biased'

Officials were yesterday accused of favouritism in their policy on driving instructors.

Legislators at a Legco transport panel meeting said the Government, which has not issued any new licences to individual private instructors since 1972, did not want solo operators to survive.

Driving instructor saves pupil

A driving instructor took over the wheel and saved his pupil when metal frames rained down on their coach from a building site yesterday.

The two-by-two-metre frames fell while being lifted from the 14th floor to upper floors of the building in Kwai Fuk Road, Kwai Chung, near the junction of Wing Kei Street, at 9.30am.
