New tests to catch drivers on drugs

Police have added a battery of tests to their armoury in a renewed crackdown on the city's drug-drivers.

From Thursday, officers will be able to compel drivers suspected of being under the influence of narcotics to give urine and blood samples if they fail a new five-part impairment test.

TV talent judge jailed six months for drink-driving

Musician Gao Xiaosong was jailed for six months and fined 4,000 yuan (HK$4,800) over a drink-driving incident.

Gao, 42, a judge for the popular show China's Got Talent, is the first prominent figure to receive the maximum jail term since a legal amendment making drink-driving a crime took effect this month.

Drunk drivers face 5 years without licence

Drunk drivers could face harsher punishments, including loss of their driving licence for at least five years, according to a draft amendment to the Road Traffic Safety Law being discussed by the national legislature.

Members of the public and many lawyers have long complained that punishment of drunk drivers on the mainland is too light.

Drink-driver steals minibus

A drink-driver was arrested after a minibus he stole sped through a red light in Fanling early yesterday. Police said it was stolen in Luen On Street at about 2am. The man, 36, got out and tried to escape but was subdued. Officers seized a knife and a cutter on board.

Bokhary case ended with the right result

Such is the controversy surrounding the case of Amina Mariam Bokhary, the niece of one of our top judges, that her lawyer described her in court - ironically - as public enemy No 1 and blamed her predicament on a media campaign of 'character assassination'. The hearing resulted in Bokhary being jailed for six weeks for breaching five of seven conditions of her probation.

Man held for suspected drug-driving

A 26-year-old man was arrested yesterday morning in Yuen Long on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and drug possession. Noticing that the man's car was weaving, police asked him to pull over and found white powder on his nose. Officers also found a small package of what appeared to be ketamine in the pocket of his trousers and arrested him.

Tough policy for drug-driving on the cards

Law enforcers may adopt a 'zero-tolerance' approach to drug-driving and charge drivers found to have abused dangerous drugs regardless of whether their driving was impaired.

This is among proposals being studied by a working group on the growing problem, which will be the subject of a public consultation around the middle of the year, legislators heard yesterday.
