Twenty-three people are missing in remote Borneo after a boat overloaded with holidaymakers heading home for a festival capsized yesterday in treacherous rapids on a jungle river.

Rescuer drowns in bid to save trapped family as floods hit Spain

A Spanish man drowned in a failed attempt to rescue a nine-year-old girl and her grandfather who became trapped inside a car during flash flooding, a local official said yesterday.

The girl was with her grandfather and 11-year-old brother when their car was caught in rapidly rising floodwaters on Friday near Puerto Lumbreras town in southeastern Spain.

I love swimming. One of the very first things I want to teach my son is how to swim.

When the pool's open, I swim at least three times a week. Before my son was born, I was in our local pool for half an hour every day.

I am convinced my birth was made easier by all the swimming I did over the whole nine months.

Man, 48, drowns at Shek O beach trying to help 3 other swimmers

A 48-year-old man drowned yesterday at Shek O beach after he tried to help swimmers seemingly having trouble. Witnesses said the man was on a floating platform at about 5.30pm when three teenage girls cried for help while they were approaching the platform because their inflatable device was leaking air.

Man drowns in Victoria Harbour

A Pakistani man drowned while swimming in Victoria Harbour off Kennedy Town yesterday. Two men, aged 21 and 39, were swimming in the sea off the Sai Ning Street waterfront when they got into difficulty at about 7.30am. A passer-by threw a rescue ring into the sea and called police. The younger swimmer managed to grab the rescue ring, but his friend went missing.

Man drowns trying to pick up his false teeth

A 60-year-old man drowned yesterday at a public swimming pool while apparently trying to retrieve his false teeth.

The man, surnamed Mok, was spotted floating in the Kwun Tong swimming pool at about 7am. The pool was open at the time.

'Lifeguards dragged the man out of the water but he had already lost consciousness,' a police spokeswoman said.

All pools to close for blitz on bloodworms

All 36 government swimming pool complexes will close in phases over five days for a large-scale cleaning operation to eradicate the bloodworms found in some of the pools over the past two months.

The operation will begin tomorrow, with six to eight complexes being cleaned each day. The cleaning process is expected to take half a day at each complex.

A coroner's jury yesterday stressed the need for lifeguards at public pools to be well informed about procedures for handling missing-child reports after it returned a unanimous verdict of accidental death over the drowning of Tam Sek-lun, six, at a Fanling public pool on August 9 last year while four lifeguards were on duty.

A 60-year-old woman drowned at a swimming gala yesterday. She was taking part in a 1.6km swim from South Bay to Repulse Bay and got into difficulties near the end of the race. She was declared dead at Tang Siu Kin Hospital.
