The Narcotics Bureau said traffickers brought the drugs into the territory by soaking them in absorbent paper, concealing them in photograph albums and then mailing them.

One of the challenges to anti-drug authorities posed by the growing trade in methamphetamines is that they are easily produced in small, widely dispersed laboratories, so it is difficult to cut off at source. This has attracted international drug syndicates to the highly profitable logistics of getting large consignments together for shipment to markets in rich countries. To intercept these shipments and make arrests before distribution, narcotics agents need high-grade intelligence - and they need to share it across borders.

In sentencing yesterday, Deputy Judge Mr Justice Gareth Lugar-Mawson described the case - involving cocaine with a street value of more than HK$500 million - as an extremely bad example of international drug trafficking. Saying he believed most of the cocaine was bound for the mainland, Lugar-Mawson said the law had to ensure Hong Kong would not become a drug transit centre in Asia.

Spanish police have arrested six suspects, including one from Hong Kong, who allegedly laundered hundreds of thousands of euros a week in drug money. Officers exposed a network including two Chinese nationals, one suspect from Hong Kong and three Moroccans in raids at locations including a major Chinese trading estate near Madrid.

Man arrested for large cocaine haul

A South American man has been arrested for trying to smuggle HK$7.73 million worth of cocaine into Hong Kong by dissolving the drug in a liquid and soaking his clothes and suitcase with it.

The 49-year-old man was intercepted by customs officers when he arrived from Córdoba, Argentina on Monday afternoon.

Boy, 16, sent to detention centre for trafficking HK$16,000 of Ice

A 16-year-old boy was yesterday sent to a training centre for trafficking 20 grams of the drug Ice, a day after a teenage girl was sentenced for a similar offence.

The unemployed youth, Ng Ping-hei, pleaded guilty to one count of drug trafficking at the Court of First Instance yesterday. He was 15 when he committed the offence.

A 16-year-old girl was jailed for six years and seven months yesterday, after pleading guilty to trafficking 590 grams of ketamine disguised as packages of tea.

Chow Yuen-toa, who left school after Form Three and worked as a waitress and saleswoman, pleaded guilty to one count of drug trafficking in the Court of First Instance.

Hong Kong man caught with 300 grams of Ice

A Hong Kong man was arrested after trying to smuggle 330 grams of the party drug Ice, or crystal meth, from the mainland, police said on Thursday.

The man, 49, was stopped by police and customs officers at the immigration hall at the Lo Wu border control point, while returning from Shenzhen on Wednesday afternoon.
