Drum and Bass

ALBUM (1998)

Timeless Goldie FFRR

Readers old enough - and lucky enough - to have attended Goldie's 1998 performance in Tsim Sha Tsui will recall the huge turnout, rapturous response and euphoria the British drum 'n' bass DJ, artist and actor elicited.

Bridging the divide

Heavy beats. Bass pumping. Danceable rhythms. You may think this describes some cheesy top 100 hit by an artist who will disappear into pop history without making a mark. But you'd be wrong. Katy B (born Kathleen Brien) looks like she's here to stay.

LTJ Bukem

Blue Frog Sat, 10.30pm

The jazzy, atmospheric side of the drum'n'bass movement owes its existence to LTJ Bukem, a British DJ/producer whose masterstroke was to apply his love for classical and fusion music to the rough and tough sounds of the early jungle explosion.

How the Truth will set you free

It begins with a rasping hi-hat rhythm before a deep, slovenly, bassline emerges, ushering in a minimal reggae vocal that appears to concern itself with the old hippie values of peace and love.

Backstage Live May 16, 10.30pm

As a drum 'n' bass DJ based in Singapore, Kiat's big break came the only way it seems to happen in Asia: he was spotted by a visiting superstar. Hong Kong's Lee Burridge was picked out by Sasha. In Kiat's case it was Goldie, the 1990s legend who helped take the hardcore genre mainstream briefly.

Double the party power One of the best things about clubbing overseas is the popularity of multiple-room events, where night owls can enjoy a range of sounds under one roof.

Circuit breakers

There are no heroes in electronic music - and in drum'n'bass even less so. Dance music DJs and producers attract the sort of fans who would recognise their idol's second choice of mixer before their face. So it's not surprising that when it comes to probing two chaps behind one of the genre's pioneering acts, they're less than willing to go personal.
