Taiwanese tune strikes a familiar chord with Duffy

Welsh singing sensation Duffy had Hong Kong at her mercy on Friday at her concert at the AsiaWorld Arena, but earlier in the day the 24 year-old, who dominated the recent Brit Music Awards, had something of an epiphany.

Hong Kong: cultural hub

It seems Hong Kong has finally become a hotspot for international artists. Over the last fortnight, we've played host to J-rock heavyweight X-Japan, mastermind of Talking Heads David Byrne and Scottish post-rock giants Mogwai. Granted, these acts were probably more appealing to your parents, but if you think there's nothing for Young Post readers to enjoy, think again.

Duffy ready to take it easy

The sleeve is retro-cool: Duffy, in a black-and-white photo, gazes downwards melancholically like someone from a Francois Truffaut movie. It reflects how this 23-year-old Welsh singer-songwriter of soul -tinged music is writing tomorrow's classics.

Duffy

Rockferry

(Polydor)

Young, unworldly and blessed with a magnetic voice, Duffy stands out in a pop world awash with manufactured acts.

The 23-year-old has the husky tones and emotion of Dusty Springfield, but her debut album sounds surprisingly mature for a woman who confesses to feeling inexperienced and out-of-place.

Domestics make so many sacrifices

I read with interest the article on Father Dwight Delatorre (South China Morning Post, October 25) and his work with the Mission for Filipino Migrant Workers.

He does well to remind us that charity begins at home. I live with one foot in the 'middle and upper classes' that can often afford two or more maids.

Must follow cardinal rule

WITH reference to your report on the rebuff given by some members of the Duty Lawyer Scheme to Mr Justice Duffy's view that lawyers ought to have their clients' written instructions before representing them in court (South China Morning Post, on December 14), let me give my whole-hearted support to the learned judge in this regard.
