Truck driver jailed over death

The driver of a container truck who caused a fatal accident by switching lanes without checking was jailed for four months yesterday at Tsuen Wan Court. Yiu Pui-tin, 42, who was earlier convicted of dangerous driving for causing the death of a dump truck driver in August last year, was also disqualified from driving for two years.

Truck driver killed in collision at Tsuen Wan

Updated at 6.51pm: A 54-year-old dump truck driver was killed and a 42-year-old man injured in a traffic accident in Tsuen Wan on Monday morning.

A police spokesman said the dump truck had collided with a container trailer.

Lawmakers yesterday demanded better enforcement of the law that requires dump trucks to cover debris loads with sheets, saying eight prosecutions in three years was a feeble record.

Residents and drivers on the route to a planned new construction waste dump in Chai Wan could be plagued by debris from trucks if the loads are not covered properly.

Six killed in Guangzhou when truck crushes bus

A dump truck overturned and crushed a packed bus travelling on an elevated section of highway in Guangzhou yesterday afternoon, killing at least six people and injuring more than 30.

Before they could pull out the victims, rescuers had to clear away mud that kept pouring off the truck into the bus, and cut through the sides of the vehicle.

MOTORCYCLIST RUN OVER

A motorcyclist died after he tried to drive through a gap between a dump truck and lorry yesterday. Lam Kai-kay, 21, was found unconsicous behind the left front wheel of the dump truck in Sha Tsui Road, Tsuen Wan, at about 1.30pm. He was taken to Yan Chai Hospital where he was declared dead.
