Not everyone thinks ear candling is a good idea. Quackwatch - a watchdog website set up by Stephen Barrett, a doctor in the US, to monitor health frauds - says that, because wax is sticky, the negative pressure needed to pull wax from the ear canal would have to be so powerful that it would rupture the eardrum in the process.

The New Idol Hair Studio in Shek Yum, New Territories, lost a Small Claims Tribunal case brought by Ho Chi-hung, 33, who claimed one of its stylists had cut off a small piece of his ear during a haircut. Adjudicator Pang Chung-ping ordered the salon to pay Mr Ho $10,425 compensation.

Structure and functions of ear

Our ear helps us to hear and to keep our balance. Each ear has three parts: the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear.

The outer ear comprises the pinna (external ear flap) and auditory canal. The pinna collects sound waves and directs them through the external auditory canal towards the eardrum which is a thin 'skin' across the entrance of the middle ear.
