Student dies after being trapped in flat fire

An off-duty policeman tried in vain to save a 19-year-old university student as she screamed for help when her flat was engulfed by flames yesterday.

Firemen later found her unconscious in a bedroom of the 500 sq ft apartment on the 17th floor of Koway Garden, Chai Wan, and she was certified dead in hospital.

17 hurt as bus runs into coach

Seventeen people were injured when a double-decker and a coach collided on the Island Eastern Corridor in North Point. The coach was slowing down in the westbound lane and the bus driver failed to brake in time and rammed into the back of it, police said. A 51-year-old man was in stable condition in Eastern Hospital while the others were discharged after treatment.

Witness in triad loan-shark case slashed repeatedly outside flat

A clerical worker who appeared in court as a witness in connection with a loan-shark case last week was slashed in the mouth, lower jaw, neck and right arm in an ambush by a well-dressed man outside the victim's Chai Wan flat yesterday.

Handbag snatcher falls to his death

A robber died in a fall in Shau Kei Wan after snatching a handbag containing more than HK$1,000 yesterday. The man, 56, grabbed the bag from a woman, 57, at the Yiu Tung Estate at about 11.30am, and fled into a multi-storey car park. He fell from the seventh storey, apparently while trying to climb back down, police said. He was declared dead at Eastern Hospital.

Woman dies after alleged beating by son

A mentally ill woman who was beaten unconscious in an alleged attack by her son at home on Tuesday, died in Eastern Hospital yesterday. The woman, 59, was found unconscious at their Tsui Wan Estate flat in Chai Wan when a social worker visited her and her mentally ill son, 38.

Woman critical after alleged beating by son

A 59-year-old woman was in critical condition in Eastern Hospital last night after she was allegedly beaten by her 38-year-old mentally ill son in their flat on Tsui Wan Estate, Chai Wan. A social worker found the woman unconscious inside the flat after the son answered her knock on the door at about 3.30pm. She called the police, who arrested the man.

Pregnant woman arrested after boy fell from flat

A heavily pregnant mainland woman was arrested after her three-year-old nephew, left unattended with his two-year-old sister, fell from a first-floor canopy into the street below.

The boy, surnamed Qiu, landed on the roof of a hawker stall before dropping to the street and escaped serious injury.

Woman clubbed by thieves

A 28-year-old woman was hit on the head with a hard object by two men and robbed of a bag containing HK$48,000 in Chai Wan at about 10am yesterday. It was the 29th case of robbery this year in which the victim was clubbed over the head. The woman, who was attacked from behind, was conscious when taken to Eastern Hospital.

Injured cyclist airlifted to hospital

A 66-year-old cyclist was airlifted to hospital after he lost balance and careened down a slope in Sai Kung West Country Park yesterday. He was cycling with his friends when the accident happened around 11.30am. Police said that the man went down the slope for about 1.5 metres and crashed into some bushes.

Worker killed in fall from scaffolding

A worker, 59, died after falling from scaffolding outside a fifth-floor flat in North Point yesterday. The man, surnamed Ching, was working on an outer wall when the accident happened at 3.15pm, police said. He fell on to the first-floor canopy, suffering serious head injuries. Doctors at Eastern Hospital declared him dead at 3.37pm.
