A number of liberal politicians have withdrawn from the Islamist-dominated assembly drafting Egypt's new constitution, saying they were not given the opportunity to discuss articles and their suggestions were being ignored.

Egyptian army in battle for Nile island

Egyptian army troops fought a four-hour gun battle with protesters in southern Cairo, in a dispute over land on an island of the Nile, security officials said. Three protesters were killed.
