'Lightning strike' fear forces plane back to HK

A Taiwan-bound flight from Hong Kong was forced to return to the airport yesterday after it was suspected to have been struck by lightning.

6,000 strikes of lightning recorded

The Observatory recorded 6,003 strikes of lightning between 6am and 7am yesterday as a trough of low pressure moved in from Guangdong to bring thunderstorms and rain to the city. The trough weakened during the day to be replaced by a maritime airstream.

Daly flees course 'fearing for life' as lightning strikes

American John Daly ran for his life after lightning 'scared the hell' out of him during yesterday's first round of the US$250,000 Macau Open. Daly and playing partner Nico van Rensburg of South Africa walked off the course at the Macau Golf and Country Club, but the rest of the field played on as Asian PGA officials assured players there was no lightning activity in the area.

Lightning struck an overhead powerline between Tai Po and Yuen Long last night, disrupting power to many areas of the territory and trapping scores of people in lifts.

China Light and Power said power in most buildings would have been restored automatically.
