Green group calls for an eventual ban on use of incandescent lamps

Green campaigners have called for an eventual ban on incandescent lamps and more incentives for households to switch to energy- saving light bulbs.

But energy-saving bulbs must be recycled as they contained mercury, which is harmful to man and the environment, Greeners Action said.

Love of lamps lights up lives

Restaurateur Thomas Woo Chu has organised charitable auctions of lamps every Valentine's Day for the past 16 years. He has generated more than $20 million for charity from the events.

About 50 lamps made in Foshan, Guangzhou, have been auctioned in four of his Hsin Kuang restaurants this week. The sales are expected to raise $1 million for Yan Chai Hospital.

Philips forms joint venture

PHILIPS Electronics has signed an agreement with Shanghai Yaming Electric Lamp Works, a leading Chinese lamp-maker, to establish a joint venture for the manufacture of a wide range of products in China.

The joint venture will be called the Philips and Yaming Lighting Co, with Philips holding 60 per cent Philips and Yaming 40 per cent.
