Growth in freight volume at Hongkong Air Cargo Terminal slowed last month due a drop in imports and decelerating export growth.

Cargo rises 4 pc in third quarter

Total port cargo in the third quarter of this year rose a year-on-year 4 per cent to 45 million tonnes.

Inward port cargo increased 3 per cent from a year earlier to 27.3 million tonnes, while outward shipments increased 5 per cent to 17.8 million tonnes, the Census and Statistics Department said yesterday.

Emirates introduces two priority services

Emirates SkyCargo has introduced two new services to meet the growing demand for speed.

'We aim to meet customer requirements with this programme,' said Pradeep Kumar, Emirates' manager of revenue optimisation.

The priority-plus service covers airport to airport with arrangements at destination for quick delivery, the cargo equivalent of first class.

Air Canada sees cargo increase

Air Canada has recorded a 2.8 per cent increase in cargo traffic in the first seven months of this year compared with January-July 1997. Cargo traffic so far this year totals 511 million revenue tonne miles compared to 497 million revenue tonne miles in the same period last year.

Air-cargo throughput in the Asia-Pacific region fell 4.6 per cent to 1.11 million tonnes in April, compared with the same month last year, according to figures released by Airport Councils International.

Emirates cargo up 25pc

Emirates Airline carried 200,000 tonnes of freight in the 1997-98 financial year, up 25.3 per cent on the previous year.

The carrier achieved a 4.9 per cent reduction in unit cost per available tonne kilometre, which more than offset the 2.3 per cent decline in yield.

Milan air freight increases

Cargo traffic handled by Milan's two airports rose 17.3 per cent in March, compared with the same period in 1997. It totalled 19,956 tonnes, the airport authority SEA said. Cargo throughput between January and March rose 19.1 per cent to 51,996 tonnes.

Air freight leads growth in mainland

Mainland air freight grew more rapidly than all other forms of freight transport last year, according to the latest government statistics.

A recent report in the China Daily said 1.24 million tonnes of freight was transported by air last year, a rise of 7.5 per cent year-on-year.

Emirates Sky Cargo recorded a 22 per cent rise in revenue and 23 per cent rise in tonnage handled in the last financial year, the firm said.

The Emirates freight division has contributed 15.9 per cent to the airline's revenue, it said.

Mainland air freight bucks slowing trend

AIR freight continued to be the exception to the declining trend in China's transport industry in the first 11 months, the State Statistics Bureau says.

While air freight zoomed 21.8 per cent to 915,000 tonnes, total freight volume on the mainland fell 1.8 per cent to 2.46 billion tonnes.

Air cargo defies data for sector

THE mainland transportation industry has shown a fall in the January-September period this year but air freight soared 21.3 per cent to 721,000 tonnes, according to a report from the State Statistics Bureau.

Air freight and passenger volume continued to be the exceptions to this downward trend.

Korean companies see rise in revenues

KOREAN-FLAG shipping companies saw a rise in cargo movements and revenues last year, sources at the Korea Shipowners' Association said.

South Korean marine cargo movements totalled 375.08 million tonnes last year, up 10.1 per cent from a year earlier. Exports accounted for 75.76 million tonnes, up 14.2 per cent.

THE volume of transportation in China dropped last year after a sustained dip in the closing months, according to the latest government statistics.

Freight volume for the year came to 2.71 billion tonnes, down 3.2 per cent from 1993.

MAINLAND activity in transportation declined in the first 10 months of the year, with a sustained dip in the past few months.

Freight transport volume declined 0.8 per cent during the first 10 months compared with the same period last year, the State Statistical Information and Consultancy Service Centre said.
