Police tackle compensated dating apps

Police are scrambling to overcome a gap in the law that stops them prosecuting people who use internet forums and smartphone apps to solicit compensated dates.

Compensated dating is a form of prostitution in which the buyer and the seller first go on a date before having sex in return for money or gifts.

Most young people in a survey on 'compensated' or paid dating came from broken families.

The Yang Memorial Methodist Social Service study found only eight of its 57 teenage participants lived with their parents.

Twenty-two had parents who were divorced and 18 had parents who were separated, or had step-parents. Five had a parent living with a partner.

'More than 100 teens selling sex online'

More than 100 teenage girls are providing sex to men for money in what is known as compensated dating, a police investigator says.

He said the situation was getting worse and that officers had identified at least 15 websites linked to compensated dating, a disguised form of prostitution. 'Ten to 30 advertisements to promote such services are found on each website.'
