Good time Charlie

Outside Stage 27 at Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles, on a warm September evening, an army of reporters stands in wait for the man of the moment- a man who has been grabbing hyperbolic headlines around the world, not for his creative talents, but for his many colourful rampages, be they drug-fuelled, sexual or verbally diarrhetic.

Spoof on Sheen takes a dig at mainland moral standards

A mainland newspaper column lambasting troubled Hollywood actor Charlie Sheen is a talking point online.

Charlie Sheen rises, the Western empire falls. But are we Chinese really so different?

It's the rise of China and the decline of the West. How do we know this? It's Charlie Sheen, or so argues the Global Times, the sister publication of the People's Daily, the motherland's greatest 'all the news that's fit to print' newspaper.

Out of the West Wing and back to school

When Bill Clinton left the White House in 2001, he went straight on to America's lucrative after-dinner speaking circuit. George Bush senior retired to the family ranch in Texas at the end of his term of office eight years earlier.

Daring raid relived

If the fear of the plane you are flying in crashing at 10,000 metres isn't enough to put you off careering down the runway, Raid on Entebbe (World, 1.35am) will be.

23 Aug 1996 - 12:00am

War records

ENJOY it by all means, but don't forget to duck the cliches in Memphis Belle (Pearl, 9.30pm) or you could get hurt. It harks back to war films of another era, without ever being much better than them. The flying sequences are good, however, and will not only be enjoyed by plane-spotters.

The high-rollers

THE problem with Oliver Stone's Wall Street (World, 9.35pm) is that it is about horrible people who Stone expects us to admire. Stone's father was a broker and the film is dedicated to him, so perhaps the goo is understandable. That does not mean it is forgivable.

pick of the TV flicks

YES, yes, yes, I know that all of you are up in arms over STAR's rescheduling of Santa Barbara and all those other soaps but there's nothing you can really do about it apart from switching your working hours, or possibly changing your prime-time viewing habits to incorporate these wonderful movies that I'm about to recommend.

Like father, like son

REGARDS our Sheen story yesterday. The pleasant and courteous Charlie Sheen called Keeping Posted while en route to the airport to jog our memory that, ahem, it was him and not his dad Martin that this columnist was talking to at a party at the Regent's Yurestaurant.

Sheen goes for mean, hard look

DESPITE his acclaimed celluloid role in Wall Street, actor Martin Sheen didn't seem interested in knowing anything about Hong Kong's role as the financial centre of Asia while in town.

He was more curious to discover ''the quiet side of Hong Kong'', which prompted Keeping Posted to suggest a walk in the hills.

Nice suits, shame about the acting

HONGKONG favourite Jane Seymour stars as Marie Antoinette in the six-part series French Revolution (World, 8.32pm), a piece of casting that should tell you all you need to know about this production.
