German facilities eye records

The German ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven expect to record 7.9 per cent growth in cargo to 34 million tonnes for 1997 - a record.

'Increases in both general cargo and bulk cargo are responsible for the strong upswing in cargo handling in the ports,' an official said.

Asia keeps ports busy

GERMAN and European trade with the Asia-Pacific region continues to increase.

Increased imports of consumer goods from China and Hong Kong are helping boost container throughput at German ports.

The port of Hamburg saw throughput increase 8.7 per cent to 1.3 million TEUs (20 foot equivalent units) in the first six months of this year.

Bremen seeks rail link

THE ports of Bremen-Bremerhaven are lobbying hard to persuade German authorities to complete a direct rail connection between Bremen and Berlin by 1997.

''The revitalisation and modernisation of these rail lines will further improve transportation to and from the east,'' said a statement from the ports.

Korean car maker targets Bremerhaven

KOREAN manufacturer Kia will begin exporting cars to Europe the German port of Bremerhaven, Germany starting from September.

Kia, which is the second largest Korean auto producer after Hyundai, is seeking two per cent of the German new-car market by 1996, representing about 60,000 cars per year.

P&O changes ports

P&O Containers will move its weekly Europe-Middle East Gulf-southern Asia service from Hamburg to Bremerhaven to improve coverage of the German market.

The move, which becomes effective with the first vessel Maersk Rotterdam sailing from Bremerhaven on June 8, follows a recent introduction of a fourth weekly service to the Far East.

Bremerhaven boosts Asia trade

CONTAINER traffic on the Far East-Europe trade handled by the ports of Bremen/Bremerhaven grew by 45 per cent during the past two years, says a port official.

According to Mr Manfred Kuhr, the ports' managing director of container sales, the high growth rate in the trade was a result of the port operating company BLG 's continuing investment in the Bremerhaven terminal.
