For the first time, one-child families are in the majority, survey shows

Hong Kong's low birth rate has fallen further in the past five years, with the number of one-child families outpacing two-children households for the first time, a survey shows. Of 1,518 married or cohabitating women aged 15 to 49 surveyed by the Family Planning Association in its latest five-yearly study, 37.5 per cent had one child and 32 per cent had two children.

Association makes it cheaper for couples who want to get pregnant

More married couples are seeking help to get pregnant, prompting the Family Planning Association to offer subfertility treatments at fees lower than those in the private sector.

The association's Wan Chai centre started providing a service in "artificial insemination for husbands" this month - using the man's semen - for couples with difficulty getting pregnant.

Sex a taboo topic at home

A survey on teenagers' sexual knowledge found that they seldom discuss the topic with their parents.

The Family Planning Association of Hong Kong (FPAHK) surveyed 3,775 students from Form One to Form Seven between last October and January. Results show that teenagers get their knowledge about sexuality mostly from schools, peers and the media.

Book passes censors, has no photos but is still wrapped in plastic

One of the best, most informed and entertaining books on sex education to be sold in the city in many a publishing season has been released this month. But guess what? Even though the bilingual Sex in Hong Kong passed the official censors, some bookstores took one look at the title and decided voluntarily to wrap it in plastic.

The number of people using the Family Planning Association's subfertility clinics, which provide clinical assessment, treatment and referral to specialists for couples who have tried unsuccessfully to have babies, has nearly doubled in the past five years.

Health check-ups for young men a hit

The first health programme for young men in Hong Kong, which opens its doors today, is already fully booked for the next three weeks, the Family Planning Association said yesterday.

Twenty-two males aged 14 to 26 have booked their first consultation at the Wan Chai clinic, said association executive director Dr Susan Fan Yun-sun.
