Beautiful boxes

The gap between fashion and fine art is wide. It's difficult for artists to express themselves when they are creating works for hire at the behest of a client. But photographer Raphael Mazzucco, who has shot advertisements for companies such as Guess, Intimissimi and Victoria's Secret, doesn't have a problem with it.

Shots at fame

It is obvious from the photographs in the Dior Couture book, that Patrick Demarchelier loves taking pictures of beautiful women - yet his career came by accident, he says. His stepfather gave him his first camera when he was a teenager. Raised in Le Havre in northern France, he had a modest upbringing but the camera changed the course of his life. 'I took portraits of my friends.

Beautiful peep-hole

Perhaps it wasn't in the least bit surprising that Vanity Fair Portraits: Photographs 1913-2008, the highly rated travelling exhibit of photos from that august magazine, chose to have its sole US outing in Los Angeles. Through a lens darkly

The double life of Diana

Prince Harry tugs at his mother's arm as she jokingly pulls away from him, into the arms of a delighted William. It's a snapshot of a contented Diana, Princess of Wales, relaxed and happy.

An open book

Arguably one of the most influential fashion designers of the past decade, American Tom Ford has come a long way since studying acting in the early 1980s. After giving luxe label Gucci a new lease on life and revitalising Yves Saint Laurent, Ford struck out on his own earlier this year, giving him time to immortalise himself in a new book, Tom Ford.

Capturing imperfect images

FOR a celebrated photographer, Steven Klein seems strangely unimpressed by notions of perfection, beauty or glamour. He believes the age of the supermodel is over, does not plan what he is going to do before he starts clicking, and has a thing for photographing horses.

Photographer uses lens to look within himself

Renowned Japanese photographer Hideo Suzuki came to Hong Kong to present an exhibition of his work and share his experience with other photographers.

The 45-year-old sometimes spends up to two years preparing to take a single picture.

Truth behind models' meals

For those of you who think supermodels starve themselves, I can tell you that not only do they eat, but they have healthy appetites.

Sitting next to Helena Christensen, 29, and Karen Elson, 19, at a Chanel gala dinner, I was surprised to see them both asking for more bread, although Helena didn't touch her foie gras as it wasn't prepared the way she likes it.

Drugs are the fashion

There are few areas the fashion industry will not explore in an effort to shock or seduce the public into spending too much money on clothes.
