Stop the promotional faxes, Hongkongers have been saying in the past two weeks.

An average of 1,200 fax numbers a day have been added to the do-not-call register and on Tuesday the ball will start rolling towards blocking text advertisements via cellphones.

First complaints as law comes into effect

Eleven complaints regarding unsolicited e-mail, faxes and telesales calls were received by the Office of the Telecommunications Authority yesterday, as the first phase of the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Ordinance came into effect. Four of the complaints involved junk e-mails, four involved faxes and three were complaints about unwanted telesales calls.

True, small and medium-sized businesses may have struggled without internet-based transactions and instant messaging, but by no means did it represent a return to the Stone Age.
