Tired fax gets a cool makeover

Just when you thought the fax machine was dead, Sharp goes all out to make the screeching paper-guzzlers fashionable again.

Card scanners can take the drudge out of filing

I have about 2,000 business cards that I need to input into ACT! on my PC. I could have someone type them in - I don't have the patience for the task - or buy a business card reader of some sort for the job. Can you recommend one?

Modem glitch may be behind system crashes

About a month ago I bought a new modem and ever since then I have been having an odd problem with my system. Everything works fine, but every time I create a document in Microsoft Word and print to fax in order to send it out, my system crashes. I have no problems faxing from other programs, and in general I am very satisfied with both my new fax-modem and computer.

Hanging on the phone in Soho

Working in a Soho (small office/home office) environment may be lonely, but it does have its advantages. For a start, with no one else around to cause distractions, you tend to get more work done.

Check fax bills carefully

TWO years ago I was playing around with my newly installed fax modem in my computer, when I happened to notice that the computer readouts of my fax activities did not match with Telecom's bills. Whenever a fax had been unsuccessful, that is, the dialled number responded as busy, I was being charged regardless of that unsuccessful connection.

Still 'fan' of the fax

I WAS pleased to see your comments about hand cell phone pricing. In Canada now, the provider charges C$60 (about HK$342) per month and gives the phone to the customer. Real competition is long overdue.

Regarding your article on fax machines, however, I would take the opposite view.

Hybrid Acer fax has a PC's brains

THE AcerFAX F-26, one of the first PC-connectable fax machines, combines all the advantages of a standalone fax machine with the brains of a PC.

The machine was developed to fill in a gap in the telecommunications market left between standalone fax machines and PC-based faxing.

It offers all the advantages of both.

Computers find fast fax solution

AS our company recommends and installs computerised fax solutions, I was interested to see the article entitled ''PCs fail to beat fax machines'' in last week's Technology Post.

For people who spend their day faxing newspaper articles to their friends, I agree that ''stand-alone fax machines remain easier to use''.

Flying into a flood of portable office trouble

SO you have packed your powerful notebook computer, your little bubble-jet printer, your brand new fax modem, transformers, phone cables and a box of diskettes with extractions from the corporate database.

Because it was crammed with equipment, there was little room in your briefcase for the proposals, presentation and reports.
