For me and my fellow Americans, April 15 is the dreaded deadline for the annual rite that comes with citizenship - filing taxes.

'Pay-as-you-earn' system costly to taxpayers

I refer to the letter from Patrick Gilbert headlined 'Monthly tax collection makes financial sense' (Sunday Morning Post, January 19).

Presumably, Mr Gilbert has in mind the 'pay-as-you-earn' (PAYE) system which has been adopted by some other tax jurisdictions as a means of collecting tax on income.

Wages fund holds back-pay key

How will the workers get wages they are due but have not been paid? This is the biggest question holding up corporate rescue legislation, one of those hallmarks of a world class city that we may have been first in Asia to discuss but could be the last to implement.

Sharing the burden

As a taxpayer in the private sector who has not had a pay rise since April 1998, I fail to see why my taxes should be used to increase the pay of civil servants. I do not even enjoy a 'step' or seniority rise as they do, and any compensation survey will show just how well paid these individuals are in the market.

Provisional tax is paid after income earned

I refer to the article headlined, 'Reserves ripe for refunds', by C K Lau (South China Morning Post, June 5).

The comments regarding provisional tax require clarification. In particular, it was suggested that our present provisional tax system amounts to one under which Government borrows money from taxpayers.

Tax proposals perpetuate present flawed system

THE Government has announced its intention to tackle tax avoidance by people who set up service companies. Before it does so, it should consider that the reason such companies are set up is the fundamental unfairness of Hong Kong's system of personal taxation.
