French tax evasion minister resigns as probe set to examine his own finances

The French minister in charge of clamping down on tax evasion has resigned after allegations that he evaded taxes with a secret Swiss bank account. Jerome Cahuzac, the budget minister, who has vehemently and repeatedly denied the accusations, stood down on Tuesday hours after it was announced a legal investigation had been opened into the accusations.

Public underwhelmed by relief

More than half the public believe the tax relief provided by the finance minister is inadequate, a university survey has shown.

Only 37 per cent of 643 respondents said the concessions were adequate, compared to 53 per cent who said the opposite.
