Volunteers piled up sandbags to keep a swollen river from overwhelming the Czech capital's historic centre yesterday after floods across central Europe forced factories to close, drove thousands from their homes and killed at least seven people.

Six people have died and four others are missing in floods that swept through a southern Philippine region still reeling from a deadly typhoon disaster, authorities said on Wednesday.

Days of heavy rains on Mindanao island left the major city of Davao and nine nearby towns flooded, including areas that were devastated by Typhoon Bopha in early December, the civil defence office said.

Heavy monsoon rain triggered severe flooding in large swathes of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, on Thursday, bringing the city to a halt with many government offices and businesses forced to close because staff could not get to work.

Chinese authorities say 673 people have died in floods this year and another 159 people went missing from the disasters.

Water Resources Minister Chen Lei said on Saturday that the year was marked with above-average rain and snow in parts of China and a rainstorm in Beijing that killed 79 people in July.

For nearly a decade, scientists told city and state officials that New York faces certain peril - rising sea levels, more frequent flooding and extreme weather patterns. The alarm bells grew louder after Tropical Storm Irene last year, when the city shut down its subway system and water rushed into the Rockaways on Long Island and in Lower Manhattan.

Asia must heed warning of recent floods

Are Asia's recent floods the result of bad luck, bad weather or bad design? Manila was left paralysed, with a third of the city under water and thousands evacuated from their homes. A few weeks earlier, the worst floods to hit Beijing in decades killed 77 people and affected nearly one million others. A year ago, Thailand's floods caused the deaths of more than 600 people.
