Hundreds pack waterfront to cheer Rubber Duck’s return

Hong Kong on Tuesday joyfully welcomed the return of a giant inflatable rubber duck, which drew tens of thousands of visitors before it was abruptly deflated for maintenance for almost a week.

Yesterday was the coldest day in May in almost a century. But the sun came out and warmed up the city when the gigantic Rubber Duck finally graced Victoria Harbour, melting the hearts of more than a thousand spectators waiting in the cold all morning.

While we fret about the deadly bird flu from up north, this giant ducky floating in our harbour has brought much-needed lighthearted relief. Our pressure cooker of a city certainly needs more laughter and humour, and less anger and confrontation. So thank you, Florentijn Hofman!

More trouble at the docks? Everyone sailing past Tsing Yi was in for a big surprise yesterday - but one certain to leave a smile on their faces. The 16.5-metre tall Rubber Duck, the work of Dutch conceptual artist Florentijn Hofman, was going through some warm-ups before being fully inflated and moved to Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui on May 2.

The 16.5-metre giant "Rubber Duck" is inflated at a Tsing Yi dock yesterday. The installation, by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, was built to resemble the beloved yellow bath toy. The duck is expected to bob in the waters of Ocean Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui from May 2 to June 9.
