Ford Motor Company

Founded by Henry Ford in 1903, Ford is the second biggest US carmaker. It weathered the Great Depression intact, but only survived the Global Financial Crisis by raising more than US$20 billion in cash and mortgaging its trademark blue oval. It was the only major US carmaker to avoid a US government bailout.

Chinese car exports to Australia hit asbestos road bump

China's budding car export trade suffered a setback yesterday when an Australian distributor recalled 21,500 vehicles made by mainland carmaker Great Wall Motor and another 2,250 Chery Automobile vehicles over traces of asbestos found in their engines and exhausts.

Manufacturer targets China

Ford is to build a US$760 million assembly plant in Hangzhou, doubling its passenger car capacity in China to 1.2 million units a year by 2015.

The new plant will be invested jointly by Ford and its joint venture Changan Ford Mazda Automobile (CFMA), with initial capacity of 250,000 units annually.

Mainland car sales in August remain steady

Sales of cars on the mainland continued to grow at a slow and steady single-digit pace last month, according to preliminary figures.

Carmakers shipped 1.09 million units of sedans, minivans, SUVs and microvans last month, up 6.9 per cent from a year earlier, unofficial data released yesterday by the Shanghai-based China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) shows.
