The Government Flying Service has deployed a helicopter to drop water on a forest fire that has been raging for more than 18 hours in Pat Sin Leng Country Park near Tai Po.

Indonesia starts cloud-seeding to fight smog

Indonesia has begun seeding clouds in an attempt to create rain to put out blazes that have choked Singapore and Malaysia with smog, officials said, while launching investigations into plantation firms suspected of starting the fires.

Singapore urged Indonesia to take "urgent measures" as severe air pollution from forest fires on Sumatra choked the densely populated city state.

Singapore's skyscrapers, including the Marina Bay Sands casino towers, were yesterday shrouded in haze and the acrid smell of burnt wood wafted through the central business district.

The Pollutant Standards Index reading at noon stood at 105, according to the National Environment Agency (NEA) website. Any reading above 100 is categorised as unhealthy.
